~Training~
Cardinal Stables &
Riding Academy has a gradual & targeted approach to training. We make sure your
horse or pony has a solid foundation for riding, then we gradually move into
targeted and detailed training based on the discipline you desire.
We accept horses &
ponies of all ages, from weanlings up, based on your training needs. We have
many programs, including our unique foal/good citizen program that allows your
foal the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to become a productive and
happy "people friendly" horse all the way up to training your horse for the
Hunter Circuit. We also have several training plan options that variety in
intensity depending on your training needs.
Our trainer, Bobbie Sawyers, has been riding horses dating back to her very
early childhood. She grew up on a horse farm and has competed since childhood in
Hunters, Hunter Paces and has also even competed in local Western Pleasure. She
has many years of trail experience along good "Horse Sense". She is experience
children and knows what it takes to make a youth mount as well! She is very
competent with horses and will not push your horse too quickly. She makes sure
your horse is ready before moving on to the next step! She is also very
knowledgeable in movement and gaits and is qualified to determine your horses
suitability for a particular purpose. She will not waist your time or money and
will speak with you immediately if she feels your horse or pony is or is not
suited well for their rider or discipline. She can adapt to each horse and never
rides every horse the same way, focusing on what makes your horse tick!
Bobbie also heads up our consignment program and if desired,
will prepare your horse and and show them to potential buyers.

Our
Philosophy & Approach
We believe there are basics
that cross into all disciplines that should be the foundation of training in
every horse & pony. Every mount, regardless of discipline should have good solid
ground manners, lunge line training and should be willing to accept the guidance
of their trainer in and out of the ring. They should be willing to enter, calmly
and quietly, into new and unusual environments... this prepares your horse for
the change of scenery they encounter from competitions to the basic trail ride!!
Your horse or pony should be willing to go into three good gaits on request.
Every horse/pony has to know the basics! Here at Cardinal Stables & Riding
Academy, we train from the ground up!
Next, after establishing a good basic foundation, we gradually
move your horse or pony into their targeted discipline. We are educated in Basic
to Advanced Hunters, Basic to Advanced Jumpers, Basic Dressage, Basic
Cross Country, Basic Eventing, Basic Western Pleasure, Pony Club, 4-H,
Children's Hunters, Hunter Paces, Fox-Hunting.
We are experienced in evaluating the riders needs and train
each horse to work well for their specific rider. For instance, do you ride on a
quiet easy rein with little leg contact, or do you prefer a tight rein with
constant leg contact? Are you an experienced rider, or a beginner rider? What
will you be doing with your horse? We use all these guides and more to determine
how we train your horse.

This program offers two options based on your horse or
pony's age and is one of the best foundations for your future mount. Most owners
leave their horse/pony in a pasture until they are of the age to get started
under saddle. At this point, a horse or
pony sees training as an "interruption" in their life instead of being a part of
their life! This can be a very big mistake, leaving you with an
unwilling, unhappy and difficult horse.
Horses need a start!! They need gradual introduction to
riding. We whole-heartedly believe you can get a horse or pony so accustomed to
riding basics before you ever even get on them! We believe that when the time
comes to actually mount your horse, it should be no big deal to them, they
should already know what the saddle, bridle, bit, etc, feels like and should
have already accepted it as part of their life.
Youngsters will typically be assigned a stall and are lead
each morning to a paddock, turned out and then caught and brought back in at
night, or visa-versa, ass part of their experience. They will also learn to be
in the company of and accept the company of other similar aged youngsters. There
is a minimum stay of 2 months for the Foal /Good Citizen/ pre-riding program.
Sessions that include actual hauling will be counted
as 2 sessions for that week. Sessions last between 45 minutes to 1 hour. For an
additional fee we also offer photo/video journaling that is viewable via your
foal's/horse's web page.
Option 1 - Ages 12 months up - $200.00 Pre-Paid
Per Month
This program is a perfect -pre-requisite to under saddle training. We prepare
your yearling for what's to come by getting them accustomed, to baths, picking
their feet, leading, loading-hauling, standing for the vet/farrier. They
learn ground manners by learning to stand to be groomed, cross-tied, trailer
tied, etc. Yearlings learn good manners around the farm, and desensitizing. Your
young horse/pony will be introduced to basic lunging to understand driving
effects of the whip and general voice commands. They will also be introduced to
being tacked up, leg wraps, and depending on the time of year being hosed off or
wearing a blanket/sheet. Depending on the age of your yearling, we will
introduce them to driving, so they learn to turn, stop and move forward when
asked and get used to the feeling of the bit.
Foals/horses should be at least basic
halter trained. This program includes fee's for hauling out and fee's to get
into local horse parks.

Option 2 - Ages 6 months to 1 year

The goal of this program for this age is getting your foal
to willing accept a horse/human relationship and to respect your role as "head
horse".
There is no demanding or forced exercise for foals of this
age group. These colts and fillies will be introduced to the skills needed to be
handled on a daily basis, and to prepare them for their eventual careers as
'people horses'. Being caught, leading, tying, loading, age related
desensitizing, obstacle course work, grooming, learning to be mannerly for the
vet/farrier. Foals should be
at least halter trained. There are no off-farm trips for this age
group.
